Muki Farmers Cooperative Society is dedicated to empowering farmers in Kenya through sustainable dairy farming practices. With a strong focus on providing integrated support services such as milk collection, training, farm inputs, artificial insemination (AI), credit, marketing services, and resource management, we ensure that our members thrive in a competitive agricultural sector.
Muki Farmers Cooperative Society began in the early 1990s when Kenya Creameries Cooperative (KCC) collapsed, and the liberalization of agricultural services prompted the need for organized milk marketing. By 1992, the society introduced a milk collection and marketing department, quickly gaining momentum and reaching an intake of 8,000 liters daily. Officially registered in 2001 under the Cooperative Societies Act 490 of Kenya, Muki Farmers Cooperative has grown substantially, now with over 22,000 registered members, and continues to support dairy production through integrated services.
Muki Farmers Cooperative (MFCS) is located in North Kinangop, in Nyandarua South Sub-County of Nyandarua County, Kenya. The Society was pioneered in 1991 with an initial membership of 26, led by a successful local businessman concerned about the increasing number of community members seeking soft loans. This initiative coincided with the liberalization and privatization of agricultural services and the collapse of the state-owned Kenya Creameries Cooperative (KCC).
In 1992, the leadership recognized dairy farming as a significant economic activity in the community and established a milk collection and marketing department. This venture quickly gained traction, bulking over 8,000 liters within the first days of operation. By 2000, members resolved to transform the department into a separate entity, leading to the official registration of Muki Farmers Cooperative Society in 2001 under the Cooperative Societies Act 490 of Kenya. The cooperative's mandate expanded to support dairy production and facilitate complementary services for dairy commercialization.
Currently, Muki Farmers Cooperative Society boasts over 22,000 registered members, with an average of 7,500 active participants. The society's daily milk supply averages 7.5 liters per farmer, surpassing the national average of 3-5 liters per day depending on the production system. The highest recorded daily milk intake reached 75,000 liters in 2016. All milk is marketed through Kinangop Dairy Limited (KDL), a subsidiary with the capacity to process over 200,000 liters per day.
Muki Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd is part of the Muki Group of Societies (MGS), which includes three other entities: Muki Investment Cooperative Society (MICS), Muki SACCO, and Kinangop Dairy Limited (KDL). Muki Investment Cooperative Society serves as the group's investment arm, while Muki SACCO provides financial services to Muki Farmers Cooperative Society members and the other subsidiaries. Kinangop Dairy Limited is a joint venture where Muki Farmers Cooperative Society, through Muki Investment Cooperative Society Ltd, holds shares alongside its members.
Members of Muki Farmers Cooperative constitute 80% of the membership, shareholding, and savings within Muki SACCO. Each subsidiary operates independently, led by a separate board of directors and management team, ensuring the cooperative's continued growth and commitment to supporting dairy farmers in the region.
To be the preferred cooperative society in the buying and marketing of milk nationally while offering fully integrated dairy support services.
To sustainably empower members to optimize milk production by providing competitive and timely payments, training, farm inputs, artificial insemination (AI), credit, marketing services, and prudent resource management.
